Les Mills Asia Pacific (LMAP): Tell us about your BODYCOMBAT 100 event

James Lu (JL), Group Fitness Coordinator: Our BODYCOMBAT 100 event was held in our sports fields at Gunyama Park in Zetland. Open to both members and non-members, we had a stage step, brand new sound system, and BBQ afterwards. There was a total of 17 Instructors to team-teach the special 90-minute BODYCOMBAT100 session, which included all the bonus tracks.

We received lots of positive feedback from participants who loved this outdoor event which included: live music; fully prepared Instructors wearing matching outfits; most Instructors team-taught one track, although some taught more – and this worked well as it enabled members to experience various Instructors and their different styles of teaching. This included Natasha (who is a great role model, an international Trainer and Presenter for Les Mills Asia Pacific, and a mentor and trainer for some of our Instructors); she led the team in an amazing performance.

We also rostered two or three staff to help and direct participants (e.g., to the bathrooms, where to store belongs), and to prepare the BBQ at the back of the sports field for when the event finished.

LMAP: What were your specific goals for this event?

JL: We wanted all our participants to celebrate this milestone along with our Instructors, who were very excited! The goal was retention of current members plus attracting a lot of new members. We found that changing the location of the class to outdoors, was a great way to keep it fresh for members and, as always, team-teaching can bring more energy to the stage, which was also a win!

The investment to deliver this event was around $3,500. This covered staff wages and the BBQ catering; the majority of the cost was to purchase the brand-new speakers/sound system, which will be reused at future events.

By choosing an outdoor venue and offering the event for free, it encouraged a large number of participants, including both regular attendees and newcomers, to join in without a financial barrier. The spacious park setting provided an open, energetic atmosphere that amplified the event's excitement, drawing in passersby and creating a buzz.

Promoting it as a significant milestone in BODYCOMBAT’s history, the event capitalised on the anticipation and community spirit that’s been built over 25 years. Leveraging social media and local fitness communities helped generate interest and build momentum leading up to the launch. Additionally, the involvement of skilled Instructors and the integration of music and martial arts elements ensured a compelling and engaging workout, leaving participants with a lasting impression and reinforcing BODYCOMBAT's brand presence in Sydney.
