If you're wanting to get stronger, LES MILLS STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT™ is a sequence of 12 x 45-minute progressive workouts.

Whether new to lifting or a seasoned pro, LES MILLS STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT will build muscle, improve technique, and grow your confidence so you can train more powerfully in the studio and on the gym floor.

LES MILLS STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT is progressive strength training, meaning each workout focuses on a specific training protocol for building strength over the 12 workouts. This ranges from Foundational Strength, to Hypertrophy, to Pure Strength, while the structure and feel is very different to BODYPUMP®.

The music is there to provide great workout tracks but there’s no requirement to move to the beat. Instead, optimum results are achieved through the use of time under tension and rep-ranges, depending on the prescribed protocol of the workout.

You need weights for LES MILLS STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT workouts – and the more you have the better. The SMARTBAR® is ideal because the gator technology and ergonomic hand weights make it easy to add and remove weights quickly in class.

Yes. The 12 workouts have been carefully designed by a team of strength experts, physios, and trainers to build strength in phases based on strength and conditioning science. When you move through these workouts in the correct order you will safely and effectively maximise the gains.

Hello gains! LES MILLS STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT uses the science of hypertrophy to spark significant muscle growth. More muscle = improved overall fitness, protect joints, reduce injury risk, cut disease risk and keep your metabolism in great shape. What’s not to love?!

BODYPUMP is based on a formula of high rep strength training to the beat of the music, to build strength endurance using light weights. LES MILLS STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT is a pure strength conditioning workout which allows you to go at your own pace (not in time to the music), making it a great complement to BODYPUMP. With a focus on hypertrophy muscle-building, LES MILLS STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT utilises strength conditioning, lifting fundamentals, muscle-building techniques, to help members progress their skills and strength.

No, but it is a great complement. BODYPUMP focuses on high rep strength training to build strength endurance. LES MILLS STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT has a hypertrophy muscle-building focus, which helps you fine-tune your lifting technique and will drive improved results from BODYPUMP and other strength workouts.

It’s an easy and quick training pathway for Les Mills Instructors to become a LES MILLS STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT™ Instructor – in fact, you can be certified and teaching within three weeks!


Instructors complete pre-work, attend a five-hour Trainer-led online training session, and submit your video for assessment three days after the completion of the online training. Within three weeks, you can be fully certified to teach LES MILLS STRENGTH DEVELOPMENT in your club.
