INSTRUCTOR OF THE MONTH – AUSTRALIA (June 2024)

In this new regular feature, we’re highlighting Instructors from Australia and Southeast Asia who demonstrate exemplary commitment to ongoing education and upskilling, having regularly attended Quarterly Workshops, purchasing Quarterly Release Kits, attending events, and completing Advanced Training. And thanks to our friends at Fitness Audio, each featured Instructor receives a microphone case and belt valued at $75. This month, we’re featuring Amy Skorikov from Melbourne.

Tell us about your Instructor journey

My journey towards becoming an Instructor began at the age of 15, when my mum encouraged me to try my first Les Mills classes. She had been participating since the inception of Les Mills in Australia (around 1996).

With my background in dance and being naturally active, my mum invited me to join her for a class, and from that moment, I was captivated. The energy of training in a group, the invigorating music, and the exhilarating challenge of the workout resonated deeply with me. Group fitness became my sanctuary, offering an escape from the demands of everyday life.

Despite always harbouring a desire to become an Instructor, I lacked the confidence to take the leap. It wasn’t until Pete Peterson – one of my BODYPUMP® Instructors at the time (who is now my fiancé) – suggested I pursue instructing, having recognised my passion for group fitness and potential as an Instructor. Inspired by his encouragement, I booked myself in for my first Instructor Training, which was BODYPUMP.

This journey from participant to Instructor has been transformative, empowering me to share my passion and assist others in achieving their fitness goals. Since then, I've expanded my certifications to also include BODYATTACK®, LES MILLS SPRINT®, THE TRIP® and LES MILLS TONE®. Each certification represents a milestone in my journey, reflecting my ongoing commitment to mastering the craft of being a group fitness Instructor.

When I think about my own journey to-date, as a Les Mills Instructor, I'm reminded of the profound impact that passion, community, and connection have had on my experience. Whether it's the joy of inspiring others or the privilege of being there for them, every moment is infused with purpose and fulfillment. Whether it's the exhilarating energy of in-person workshops or the convenience of online resources, each opportunity for growth and learning propels me forward on my path.

As I continue to evolve, I'm grateful for the supportive network of fellow Instructors and the boundless opportunities to make a positive impact. Together, we inspire, uplift, and empower, creating a legacy of strength, resilience, and transformation.

What do you love most about being a Les Mills Instructor?

What I love most about being a Les Mills Instructor goes beyond just fitness. It's the opportunity to be there for people, to support them on their journey, and to make a positive difference in their lives. Whether it's providing encouragement during a challenging workout, lending a listening ear before or after class, or simply being a source of inspiration, being there for my participants is what truly fuels my passion.

Being a Les Mills Instructor allows me to connect with others on a deeper level, to build meaningful relationships, and to create a supportive community where everyone feels valued and empowered. It's more than just teaching fitness classes; it's about making a genuine impact in people's lives, and that's what I love most.

As Instructor of the Month, Amy has an exemplary record of attendance at Quarterly Workshops. In fact, Rhett Watts (the Trainer/Presenter who nominated Amy), told us that when Amy was unable to participate in Workshops due to surgery, she still attended as an observer! What do you believe are the key benefits of attending Workshops?

Workshops offer instructors valuable opportunities for growth and connection. They provide a dedicated space for learning from the experienced presenter team and networking with fellow instructors. By attending workshops, instructors can get a feel for the new release as a participant, expand their knowledge, refine their teaching techniques, and foster a supportive community.

What do you like the most about In-Person Workshops?

I absolutely love the atmosphere of In-Person Workshops. The opportunity to reconnect with fellow Instructors and Presenters is priceless. Not only do we learn from the Presenters, but the entire experience is truly enjoyable. And let’s not forget about the energy! There's something genuinely magical about being in a room filled with fellow Instructors who share the same passion and dedication. You can practically feel the enthusiasm radiating throughout the studio, creating an unforgettable experience. It's this unique combination of learning, networking, and pure fun that makes In-Person Workshops so special.

What do you like most about the Online eWorkshops?

One of the aspects I appreciate most about Online eWorkshops is their accessibility. They offer a valuable opportunity for Instructors who may be geographically challenged, or who find it difficult to attend In-Person Workshops. This inclusivity ensures that all Instructors have the chance to upskill and improve their teaching abilities. By providing both In-Person and Online options, it caters to the diverse needs and circumstances of Instructors, making professional development more accessible and flexible for everyone.

What do you find most helpful about the Quarterly Release Kits?

Their flexibility and convenience! As an Instructor, having access to these Kits allows me to stay up-to-date with the latest choreography, music, and educational materials, which is ideal if I'm ever unable to attend Workshops. The Quarterly Release Kits ensure that I can deliver engaging and effective classes to my participants. They provide me with the resources I need to consistently deliver high-quality Les Mills programs to my members, ultimately enhancing their fitness experience and satisfaction.

What tips can you offer help other Instructors learn new Releases efficiently and effectively?

My tip is to make the most of the available resources! Our choreography notes are packed with valuable insights, offering detailed explanations, cueing tips, and suggestions from the Les Mills team. By thoroughly reviewing the choreography notes, Instructors can gain a deeper understanding of the material and enhance their teaching skills. Additionally, don't hesitate to seek support and guidance from fellow Instructors or the Trainer and Presenter team, if you come across any challenges. By leveraging all available resources, Instructors can ensure they are fully prepared to deliver exceptional classes to their participants.

What would you like to work towards in your career as a Les Mills Instructor?

My focus is to develop deeper connections with the programs that resonate with me, so I can continue to provide the best possible class experiences for my members. I am committed to continuing to evolve as an Instructor, and I’ve found that Advanced Training has certainly helped me with this. I am very ambitious, and have higher aspirations, so I am excited for further growth and development within the Les Mills community.

What would you tell someone who is considering becoming a Les Mills Instructor?

Take the leap and go for it! Transitioning from the floor to the stage can feel daunting at first, but the opportunity to inspire others every day is incredibly rewarding. As a Les Mills Instructor, you have the chance to make a meaningful impact on people's lives, helping them achieve their fitness goals and become the best version of themselves. Embrace the challenge, believe in yourself, and remember that every step you take towards becoming an Instructor brings you closer to a fulfilling and rewarding journey.
